Are you on the left or on the right? This is not a political question related to conservativism, liberalism, being progressive, or whatever you want to call it. It is about faith and reason; it is about being either head or heart driven. Are you too busy trying to prove everything from a rational point of view that you miss the beauty of its existence? Don't get me wrong, I am not taking a side, but don't you agree that science cannot explain everything? It will try, because for many, something cannot be embraced unless it can be quantified. Can leadership or friendship be quantified? Can we quantify what moves us in the music of a symphony or rationalize the human spirit or Divine Intent? Can we put a number on these so they can be compared or evaluated?
Perhaps it is time to move our focus from our heads to our heart. This means rather than try to weight it, just embrace it! Embrace it so deeply that it becomes part of your reality. Joanne was diagnosed with a terminal cancer. She told me in spite of her analytical nature she was not going to spend the rest of her life asking why. "Often there is no answer to why in what happens to us in life," she said to me on one of our first encounters after the diagnosis. "I am just going to embrace it and live each moment of each day anticipating the opportunities that come my way." The world is full of people like Joanne who embrace things with their heart, rather than analyzing it with their mind.
Karl Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) wrote a document on faith and reason; Fide et Ratio. It taught me to me a bigger believer. It challenged me to embrace what I could not prove. Why not believe in the unbelievable? Why not believe in Divine Intent? Why not believe in the effect of virtue, character; the grace and energy it brings into our lives when we live right?
Augustine of Hippo, theologian and philosopher stated, "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe."
Why not believe that good people doing good things can change the world? Why not believe that as you give you receive, or as you love you are loved, or as you forgive you are forgiven? What do you truly believe in? What is your personal creed so to speak? What is your constitution (as in the US Constitution)?
